1868; Ku Klux Klan is a Hebrew term

From a book published in London in 1868, but apparently from a journal first published in Memphis:

Ku Klux Klan is a Hebrew term, and, if not found in the Talmud, is met with a very old Jewish work, entitled A True and Authentic History of the Great Rebellion of the Hebrews against the Ancient Egyptian King Pharoah, B. C. 2000. In this work the orthography is thus: 'Cu Clux Clan; ' and is interpreted in the English language, the Straw Club, which is supposed to allude to the fact that Pharoah required the hod-carriers to furnish their own straw, and also to the proverb, known to be of ancient Hebrew origin, "Straws show which way the wind blows."

The Jewish scholar on Jewish American history, Anton Hieke, cites the quote in his 2013 book: Jewish Identity in the Reconstruction South: Ambivalence and Adaptation, and gives an interesting commentary on the Judaistic inspiration of the early Klansmen:

“[...] Judaism was utilized in constructing a link of the Ku Klux Klan to the biblical past. [...] Thus, the Klan projected their history back some four millennia and through biblical Judaism received divine approval. The Israelites in Egyptian bondage fought their ungodly oppressor heroically and in justice and finally escaped oppression through Moses by God's direct intervention. Citing Jewish persistence against overwhelming odds, advocates of the Confederacy and Lost Cause subtly referred to the divine support offered against the Egyptians. The Klan aspired to be the innocent chosen ones in an unjust conflict. Any measures to be taken by the Klan were therfore pre-approved by the scourning god of the Old Testament.”
