Auschwitz "gas chamber" builders acquitted in court

At their 1972 trial in Vienna, former officers in the Waffen-SS and designers/builders of four of the Auschwitz-Birkenau gas chambers. They were acquitted after the court heard expert testimony that the gas chambers weren't gas chambers.

There were seven alleged chambers at Auschwitz.

Krema I, was at Auschwitz I, the Stammlager (main camp).
Experimental gassings supposedly took place in Block 11 at
Auschwitz I, but Krema I was the first specially designed gas chamber, and it is claimed around 10,000 were killed in there.

Although the building was 'reconstructed' by the communists as the Nazis had converted it into an air-raid shelter.

The other six were at Auschwitz II, Birkenau.

The original two were converted "peasant's cottages":
Bunker I "Little Red House"
Bunker II "Little White House"

The other four were specifically designed as death factories:
Krema II
Krema III
Krema IV
Krema V

The trial of SS-Obersturmführer Walter Dejaco and SS-Untersturmführer Fritz Karl Ertl source known as the "Vienna Auschwitz trial" for the "architects of the crematoria" source took place before the Superior Criminal Court in Vienna between January 1 and March 10, 1972, under the presiding judge Dr. Reisenleitner.

Both defendants had been involved in the design, construction, and maintenance of the gas-chambers/crematoria at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Both were accused by the Austrian public prosecutor of having at least indirectly participated in the planning and execution of mass murder of European Jews.

During the trial, an expert report on the possible interpretation
of the blueprints of the alleged gas chambers of the Auschwitz
and Birkenau crematoria was presented to the court. The report
concluded that the rooms in question could not have been gas
chambers, nor could they have been converted into gas chambers.

A construction expert testified before the court, he recalled
later that he basically had to answer two questions put to him
by the court:

Do the plans indicate that these were gas chambers?
His answer was: No.

Could the accused infer from the plans that they could be
transformed later into gas chambers?
Here also was the answer: No

Walter Dejaco and Fritz Karl Ertl were acquitted.

The court records to this trial are allegedly not available.

The reason why these two men were acquitted is never mentioned:

Books which mention the acquittal state it was because
the jury believed they were merely following orders source1 source2

"In the Vienna Auschwitz trial a well known construction specialist prepared an expert opinion. The material evidence did not indicate mass killings with poison gas."
