B’nai B’rith Enhances its
Relationship with India

Washington, D.C. (December 22, 2003) – Yesterday,
during the second annual Jewish-Indian Chanukah Celebration,
B’nai B’rith International reemphasized the importance of
cultural understanding and good trilateral relations among India, the
United States, and Israel, and a strengthening of the link between
Jews and Indians.
Ambassador of India to the United States Lalit Mansingh graciously
welcomed 200 members of the Jewish and Indian communities into his
home for the Chanukah celebration and dinner, cosponsored by
B’nai B’rith, the Embassy of India, Jack Hahn, and the
American Jewish Committee. Mansingh, who has served as ambassador
since March 2001, recounted numerous Indian Jews to Indian society in
the 3,000-year relationship between Jews and Indians.
B’nai B’rith Klutznick National Museum Director Diana
Altman, in announcing that 2004 is B’nai B’rith’s
“Year of India,” called the growing friendship between
Israel and India, “so natural.” Altman also unveiled the
museum’s upcoming photography exhibition, “Cochin Diary:
Jewish Life in Southern India.” The exhibition, which depicts
“the extraordinary harmony that has existed for centuries in
Cochin among Jews, Hindus, Moslems, and Christians,” opens
February 9 at the Sixth and I Historic Synagogue.
The museum is also planned a study tour of Jewish India led by Dr.
Kenneth Robbins in early 2005.
