Israel polluting Mediterranean with
heavy metals in violation of treaties

Israel continues to pour wastewater containing
poisonous materials into the Mediterranean, despite
the fact that the country has signed international
conventions protecting the sea. Last week the
Interministerial Committee for Waste Permits gave
permission for the Dan Region Wastewater Institute
to dump sludge containing dangerous heavy metals at
sea for another year. This decision was reached
despite the opposition of the Environment Ministry
and the Israel Union for Environmental Defense. The
union is considering taking legal action.
The Dan region deposits the sludge through a pipe
running under the sea. The union claims that,
although no negative effects of dumping heavy metals
have been shown up to this point, over time sea life
and vegetation will be damaged. The union noted
that, according to the Barcelona Convention on the
protection of the Mediterranean, Israel must prevent
the deposit of waste containing heavy metals, such
as mercury and cadmium, at sea.
The interministerial committee can grant permits to
dump waste at sea only if there is no suitable
land-based alternative for dealing with the waste,
and if all possible technological steps have been
taken to reduce pollution.
The union claims that the Dan Region did not prove
that dumping the waste at sea was the only
technologically sound solution, did not promise to
deal with the problem of heavy metals in the sludge,
and failed to provide information on the production
processes employed by the factories contributing to
the Dan Region wastewater.
Miki Mazar, chair of the authority overseeing the
Dan Region Wastewater Institute claims that
depositing the material at sea causes no
environmental damage. "We have reduced the
concentration of heavy metals by 15 percent over the
past year," she said.
Despite this, Roni Comer, acting director-general of
the Environment Ministry, claims that not enough has
been done to reduce the quantity of heavy metals
flowing into the sea.
