It's lynchtime

It's true that President Moshe Katsav said: "We should not express our
anxiety, pain and anger by hurting innocent people." And it's true
that Prime Minister-elect Ariel Sharon said: "I am absolutely opposed
to taking the law into one's own hands." But all in all, the lynching
of Bassam Salah by residents of Netanya seems to have been quietly
accepted by the public: If the Arabs lynched two soldiers in Ramallah,
we are allowed to do the same.
The Israel Police should be the first to be investigated in this case.
Even though the scene of the crime was saturated with cops both before
and after the bombing, they did not prevent the brutal beating. One
eyewitness even claimed that a policeman took part in the lynching.
Other witnesses contended that he did not participate actively, but
stood by and did nothing.
The next day, a special police investigating team asked the court to
detain Salah on suspicion of involvement in the bombing. It could be
that the lynchers happened to find the terrorist, but it could also be
that the police were putting together an alibi: If Salah was involved
in the bombing, then the lynching was not so bad, and police
indifference will be forgotten.
Another day went by, and the police were obliged to admit that Salah,
who is in serious condition at Sheba Medical Center, had nothing to do
with the bombing. He is just a worker at the market who comes to work
every day from the village of Akraba in the territories, trying to
provide for his family. But the police don't give up. Now they want to
press charges against him for working without a permit - instead of
taking action against those who hired him in contravention of the law.
One law - double standard.
