Israel accuses UN of deceit over video
taken after guerrilla capture of soldiers

When three Israeli soldiers were captured by Hizbollah guerrillas near
the Lebanese border last October, the United Nations was the first to
point out that the gunmen had dressed up as UN peace-keepers and used
fake UN insignia for their operation.
Three months later, the Israeli army "disclosed" that the Hizbollah
had posed as UN soldiers - using the same facts originally provided by
the UN to condemn the UN for not intervening.
Now the Israelis are claiming that the UN had lied all along about its
possession of a videotape taken after the seizure of the three
soldiers.
So what has Israel got against the United Nations? The tape was made
by an Indian UN soldier the day after the Hizbollah had taken the
three Israelis into Lebanon; it shows the vehicles in which the
guerrillas made their escape and a number of Hizbollah men arguing
with the UN: they wanted their cars back. But last week, it now
emerges, a senior UN official - unaware that the film had been made -
told Israelis that no such tape existed.
UN headquarters in New York has now released the tape to the Israelis,
with the faces of Hizbollah members "blacked out" to prevent
identification. In a letter yesterday to the UN secretary general,
Kofi Annan, the Israelis demanded an uncensored showing of the tape.
The y said they wanted the tape for "humanitarian" reasons - although
it only shows blood in the getaway cars. Photographs of the blood in
the vehicles were published at the time.
UN officers, however, believe there may be other reasons for Israel's
supposed anger at the UN: aware that Washington appears to favour the
presence of international observers in the occupied Palestinian
territories, they suspect Israel may wish to "prove" the unreliability
of an international force.
The Israeli press is meanwhile reporting that Indian UN troops may
have been assisting the Hizbollah, which - given India's hitherto good
relations with Israel and the professionalism of the Indian army -
seems highly unlikely.
