Lauder to head U.S. Jewish group

By Shlomo Shamir, Ha'aretz Correspondent

The nomination committee of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations has unanimously endorsed Ronald Lauder to be the next chairman of the umbrella organization. The final election will be held within a month, but Lauder, a billionaire cosmetics tycoon, was the only candidate recommended by the nominating committee in its meeting Friday.

The organization's plenum traditionally elects the candidate proposed by the nominating committee. Lauder is expected to replace the current conference chairman, Melvin Salberg, after a short period in which they will jointly preside.

Lauder, 54, has sought to head the conference for a number of years. As a stepping stone to this position, he agreed to serve as president of the Jewish National Fund in North America two years ago. This enabled him to qualify for the chairmanship of the conference, which is restricted to candidates who are leaders of national Jewish organizations.

Lauder is a close associate of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and maintains strong ties with other right-wing Israeli politicians. Several leaders of American Jewish organizations have expressed reservations about Lauder's candidacy for the chairmanship because of his close relationship with Netanyahu and because he is a prominent supporter of the U.S. Republican Party.
